What You Need to Know

You share in the cost of coverage with the Company through payroll deductions. The amount you pay depends on the plans you elect and the number of dependents you choose to cover.

You pay for many of your benefits, like medical, dental, and vision, with pre-tax dollars, which means money is deducted from your pay before withholdings for Social Security, federal, and, in most cases, state and local taxes. This helps lower your taxable income.

Other benefits, like employee life insurance, are paid with after-tax dollars.

Please note: Since you do not pay Social Security taxes on your pre-tax deductions, your future Social Security benefits could be slightly reduced. Although this reduction is usually small, it could occur if your taxable salary is below the Social Security wage base ($142,800 for 2021).

The IRS treats employee life insurance coverage over $50,000 and age-based life insurance rates over age-based IRS imputed income rates as taxable income. The value will be indicated on your pay stubs and year-end W-2 Wage and Tax Statement.

Medical plan payroll deductions

Your payroll deductions are determined by your base salary as of October 1 of the prior year (or your starting salary if hired after October 1 of the prior year) and the plan and level of coverage you choose.

Payroll deductions are based on the following salary tiers:

  • $0–$34,999
  • $35,000–$59,999
  • $60,000+

There are three levels of coverage, depending on how many dependents you want to cover:

  • Employee
  • Employee + 1 dependent
  • Employee + 2 or more dependents

Use the Payroll Deduction Cost Calculator to determine your actual payroll deduction, or review payroll deductions when you enroll.
